[flagged] Canadians are asking their government to federate (theverge.com)

Canadians = 850 signatures? Change title to 0.002% of Canadians asking

E-petitions in Canada only need 500 signatures to be presented to the House of Commons and get an official response from the government.

Toxicity follows the crowd. The Fediverse seems less toxic because it has a fraction of the user activity compared to big tech platforms. The problem is not in the platform, it is in the users themselves.

I think the fediverse has a more organic way of dealing with this - defederating bad actors is effective and also allows them to continue to exist in their own bubble. In the long term folks can just exist in the pocket of fedi they enjoy all while following and interactive with government and other accounts.

That’s an extremely mislead title.

A fair criticism. But it's also a nice wordplay.

Even by government standards, it should not be too difficult to set up a bot that copies posts from Twitter/facebook onto Mastodon for at least the official accounts of the federal government.

That's all that needs to happen.

One wonders if governments and publicly funded organisations should support commercial social platforms at all. Whether we like it or not, algorithm-driven socials are currently political. And event if we can put that aside, it means a government is actively supporting data brokering of personal information, ads, scraping of the web and whatever current controversy is taking place.

Fedi is a neutral alternative that allows everyone to follow their public services, allows said public services to also own the content they post, not constantly have to comply with some platforms community guidelines.

Not quite 1000 signatures.

Given recent petitions of withdrawing from the united nations was in the 100,000 range or the petition calling for an immediate election at 300,000 signatures.

This is essentially a nothing petition.

Intersting that Joe Biden is now available via Activity Pub:

https://mastodon.social/@potus@threads.net

Looks like Threads is indeed federating with everybody:

https://indiehackers.social/@potus@threads.net

So you could make your own instance and read everything in exactly the UI you want? Customize sorting and discovery via your own algorithms?

Is that the open web 2.0 we have been waiting for?

PS: Looks like you can't link to external accounts on a typical Mastodon instance the way I did. When you search for "potus@threads.net" and click on the result it works.

Never be fooled by the first stage of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. It's been done a thousand times now.

Well, it would be much better if Biden was posting via potus@whitehouse.gov. That would strengthen the open nature of Activity Pub.

I don’t think a lot of instances are federating with Threads though. Content on threads often violates most fedi server rules like hate speech, bullying etc.

>I don’t think a lot of instances are federating with Threads though.

The anti-Threads people are loud, but I don't think they're in the majority (or even near to it).

> In the fediverse, that is.
