I feel like the approach here kinda starts with <thing I care about> and stretches into some serious topics where that thing really doesn't seem to have anything to do with it when things go wrong.
I have a very different feeling. Not having your user rights provided by free software makes you much more vulnerable to any undemocratic actions of the government or a company.
