IMHO, there's room for both the original and new versions. Some of the best, most approachable Bard these days is in modern movies: A Thousand Acres, 10 Things I Hate About You, etc. I saw A Thousand Acres without realizing it was King Lear until then end. Then I realized, "Well, no wonder it was such a terrific story!"
