Not saying that it’s viable here to build a world map since things like furniture can move but some systems, e.g. warehouse robots do use things like lights to triangulate on the assumption that the lights on the tall ceiling are fixed and consistent.

Have you got one? Looking for installation options.

Do you live in a country where the default always maps correctly? My UK keyboards will always have specific keys wrong.

ESA? I wonder if the OS will have to confirm that the users are over 18.

What product are you referring to? One where you can’t use USB-C headphones or an adapter?

Not while you're charging.

Not while you’re charging via USB-C

I’ve got a MagSafe nightstand and powerbank that both leave the port free. I do use Bluetooth for audio so I don’t actually ever use the USB-C port at all.

Yeah, because I want to junk up my car with all that crap. You're just admitting that your "thin, elegant" Apple product becomes a Christmas tree of dongles to make it practical.

lol, it seems like you got out of the wrong side of the bed. My car (Tesla) has in-built Qi charging and a place to put both the driver and passenger phones, along with Bluetooth. I literally never use a cable with my phone.

"Getting up on the wrong side of the bed" replaces your car?

What a world you live in.

You seem to be angry at something and I’m not sure what. You don’t need to replace your car to add Bluetooth support or Qi charging to it but I think you know that there are cheap ways to do that already. It sounds like you don’t have to or want to and that’s ok too.

But you're sure I'm "angry?" Maybe your point of view is skewed toward apathy.

When a manufacturer deliberately creates a perpetual pain in the ass with anti-consumer actions such as deleting the headphone jacks from media-centric devices, it should be no surprise that self-respecting consumers will condemn that move. If you find it surprising that people are annoyed by such actions, I don't know what to tell you.

> But you're sure I'm "angry?"

Yes, by the way you come across whether you mean to or not.

I guess I’m not self respecting by your definition, in my wire-free existence.

I thought that exact thing and opened the comments to see you’d already commented with it.

There is a “case files” podcast on it that I found quite good.

This seems to be the Casefile episode about the "Phantom of Heilbronn"

https://casefilepodcast.com/case-178-the-woman-without-a-fac...

The Phantom of Heilbronn, often alternatively referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a hypothesized unknown female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at numerous crime scenes in Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

The only connection between the crimes was the presence of DNA from a single female, which had been recovered from 40 crime scenes, ranging from murders to burglaries. In late March 2009, investigators concluded that there was no "phantom criminal", and the DNA had already been present on the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples; it belonged to a woman who worked at the factory where they were made.

That's incredible. Though the effect of this will be claims that microplastics don't exist while no one in that case claimed that murders didn't happen. Happy to have learned about an interesting historical oddity either way.

I don't think anyone will claim microplastics don't exist, but people will definitely be skeptical of articles about how many there, and where they're found.

At worst, I'd expect to see people disregarding the threat, not disregarding the presence of the microplastics themselves.

I'm not sure if they have established a threat. I thought it was mostly hypothesised or very locally specific harms.

On the other hand I suspect much of the real science on environmental plastic might avoid the term microplastic since it seems to have a meaning that flows to whatever can make the scariest headline today. I have seen the size range to qualify run from microscopic up to a couple of millimetres. Volumes, quantities, or location stated without regard to individual particle size. I'm relatively certain that they have not discovered 1mm particles inside red blood cells.

Even what counts as a plastic seems to be an easy way of adding vagueness, I saw one table that seemed to count cellulose as a plastic, which makes sense if you are thinking about properties of the material, but unsurprisingly easy to come across that it's not really worth going looking for it.

I see you're not a fan of hyperbole. Though I sorta meant it, so maybe it's not.

> EVs are great if you're wealthy

Can you explain this more? I have an EV scheme through work where you can get EVs for £200/month on lease including insurance, maintenance and tyres.

Outside of these schemes you can buy a Dacia spring brand new for £10k, or a whole host of decent options second hand. £20k will get you a second hand Tesla with decent range and fast charging.

This doesn’t scream “wealthy” when an ICE Ford Focus is £30k new.

Estimations vary but it seems like at least 50% -70% of homes could support at-home charging.

There's different levels of 'wealthy'. £200/month over 10 years is still £24,000

You can buy an old-but-roadworthy Ford Focus for a tenth of that. And a whole lot of people rely on used cars in the sub-£10k range.

If you've got a £20k+ budget, then yes, the EV options are pretty good. Did browse used Teslas myself recently, but as I can't charge at home I'm pretty much stuck with ICE.

TBF these schemes tend to only be available from the better employers. If you're working a minimum wage job for anything but a ftse100 customer facing company you probably don't get the option of a 'cheap' lease.

We didn’t have a scheme at work until I asked for one. Now we do. Our company had around 40 people and the scheme is open to anyone.

Or the car. Octopus in the UK can control both cars and chargers depending on compatibility. They control my Tesla as my charger isn’t compatible.

I would also like to know the company name please.

Would love to get a Forster battery + invertor system installed. Seems like the battery is £2k for 16kWh and maybe £1k for an inverter? so interested in your cost breakdown.

tldr: Marginal Pricing

https://www.carbonbrief.org/qa-why-does-gas-set-the-price-of...

> In the UK, the marginal unit is almost always a gas-fired power plant. As a result, one widely cited academic analysis found that gas set the price of power 97% of the time in the UK in 2021.
