Aren't most exUS stocks dominated by the US economy?

Getting mostly out of hateful 8 hype isn't bad though when they're going down...

It took 200 years for Western Arabic numerals to take over accounting from Roman numerals.

That's a cautionary tale of entrenched interest if I ever heard one.

We are so much better off than in 1914 that it's ridiculous to even worry about the comparative value of an arbitrary unit of value exchange.

That's a really good point.

We pray to gods and make sacrifices to them but generally do not interact with them directly. It seems to fit squarely in the definition of parasocial.

I believe an adult is someone who can take care of themselves and those that depend on them without undue imposition on others.

Some never make it.

It has nothing to do with age.

You could argue that a 10-year-old who is pulling hens weight in the family is an adult by my definition since they are not imposing on others in the family.

I read the premises as "1. at least look at it 2. Have a way to fix it"

Those seem reasonable asks.

Edit to add: the tragedy of the school in Minab is an example of how bad things can go--and it just hints at how much worse bad data can bem

For me, it sounds much more like "vibe-bombing" or in general a lot of pressure to select targets, without necessary time for due diligence.

My understanding is that the school was a part of the military base over a decade ago and was therefore put on a target list.

The list was never updated when the building was turned into a school.

It wasn't vibe bombing, and there certainly was enough time to do due diligence, but there was no process in place to do so.

"This is an idea Rich Hickey introduced with Datomic in 2012: "

I am pretty sure the difference between online transaction processing and online analysis processing goes back a bit further than 2012.

That's a pretty positive spin on this statistic that ambulance drivers and taxi drivers die much younger than many other professions

Smug ignorance is the most exhausting kind.

Worth it just for footnote 1 on the history of the serenity prayer

It's really interesting where we draw the boundary of originality. That there is significant controversy about who originated the particular words of the serenity prayer surprised me, because I've always thought of that prayer as simply a particularly catchy rephrasing of the most well-remembered sections of Epictetus' Enchiridion

You sound like an old curmudgeon. Give me my avocado toast and exotic coffee carefully prepared in a French press and I can supervise other people clearing trails all day long (via Zoom--we're never so desperate as to need unnecessary sun exposure). Of course, I need my rebalancing hours of yoga in the morning and afternoon and personal time to ensure work-life balance.

I loved your post, it made me chuckle.

But you may have misunderstood something I failed to bring across. Most people in in my generation, including me will have just as a bad time as yours should that crash occurs.

The only difference is my generation will only endure it for a much shorter time than yours.

FWIW, I hate everything avocado, but I will miss my bagels with cream cheese and hot chocolate with whole dairy whipped cream on top :)
