I am also trying to set granular milestones and get paid every 1000€. Not provide 20000€ work and then start looking for my money. I can live with a loss of 1000€, but missing 20000€ will impact negatively my mortgage and investment plan.

That’s a nice theory. Fab is one thing, but there are afterwards packaging and testing facilities where silicon can be swapped. I worked for a short time for a military contractor. They don’t X-ray every single chip. They just use it assuming the ordered chip is the one which was delivered by the markings on the package.

I would say as electrician in Bavaria: there are enough empty roofs for solar. Especially in poorer neighborhoods. I saw similar numbers and they are scary: to reliably replace conventional power plant one needs 20x the power of wind and solar. And this hardware must be imported from China, there is no large scale production of solar equipment in Europe.

Better importing solar panels once in a while than importing fossil fuels all the time.

Which energy bill? Monthly or yearly?

Beautiful thing about percentages...

Yeah, "how much is 10% of your energy bill" would be a much more useful question!

about 10%!

Well, "yearly", "monthly, in the summer", and "monthly, in the winter" could plausibly all be different numbers.

It’s the same thing. Say you have a bill of 120€/year. On average that comes to 10€/month (120€ divided by 12 months). If you have save 10% a month you save 1€, which after 12 months becomes a saving of 12€. Now do that yearly: 10% of 120€ is… 12€.

10% of saving for July's or August monthly bill will give less than 10% saving for the year as in the winter solar output is lower.

I pay 100 Euros per month energy bill and save 10% of it so 10 Euros per month or 120 Euros per year.

are you running bitcoin farm or cook and heat with electricity with 100 eur monthly bill? my yearly consumption for whole household of 4 people is around 1.2MWh (gas cooking, and external grid central heating), which makes like <400EUR per year in Czechia (infamous for high electricity prices across Europe) and already now most of my fees are not really my consumption, but distribution and other stuff, it's even worse with my gas cooking with only 0.5MWh per year, where I paid almost only fixed fees and not the actual consumption, but tried cooking on induction and hated it

The average consumption figures used by the UK regulator https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/average-gas-and-electricity-use-exp... are 7.5MWh gas and 1.8MWh for a "small" household, so I guess you're really frugal and/or well insulated?

as I said it's excluding external central heating which covers also hot water for shower, so it always comes down what you use for heating to compare, someone use gas, someone electricity and someone is outsourcing it to heating factory (my case) on different bill

your link doesn't mention whether gas/electricity are used for heating (including hot water), plus UK houses are infamous for having horrible insulation

and I am working from home with big external display (so does my wife) as well for many years, TV is running roughly 5 hours per day, game console around <1hr and that 1.2MWh includes also AC set to 26C when it will get hot, though not spending that much time at home during July/August

Those figures will include heating from either source, yes. Non-heating electricity consumption tends to be a tiny fraction of energy use. Centralized "district heating" is pretty rare in the UK.

Nope just a normal server running 24/7, a condens dryer, a gaming rig and working from home (so display, lights and kvm switch running 8/5).

240kWh per month, 35cent per kWh and a base price of 10 Euros.

Are you paying for electricity and transfer on a separate schedule or something?

Secondly unfortunately

My Iranian ex colleague shares very interesting opinion. They trained during his army time to blow everything in the region up. So if things escalate badly the oil and gas importing countries will stay with a fraction of needed oil and gas for years. There is no backup infrastructure anywhere in the world. It will take years to rebuild the infrastructure. It will destroy world’s economy better than nukes.

I kinda expected scorched earth from Iran, or any oil producing state tbh, didn’t Saddam do this retreating from Kuwait?

Welcome to the world of embedded systems. They often do not have more resources that that. Even as completely new development (of pool control system or electricity meter).

I am the guy who participated in Green Card lottery for few years willing to work in most advanced planet‘s semiconductor companies. I changed my mind recently. Speedboat ambushes, Greenland, public executions by ICE „officers“ and now Iran war. US I knew is definitely gone. That’s not the country sharing culture and values peacefully anymore: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amerika-Haus_(M%C3%BCnchen)

To be fair, the US has never been peaceful, and it's the country that started the most wars since WW2. It's just that it used to be in our team, and human nature makes the aggressiveness of our team justified, or at least understandable, or at least ignorable, or at least not quite changing our deep feelings.

And, at least regarding the more recent ones in Iraq and Afghanistan, Europe witnessed the largest anti-war protests in history.

From that perspective, the current "emperor is naked" development might be positive in the sense that Europe can relatively soon have enough military power to be taken seriously, and at the same time become impossible to drag into an offensive war because none of its countries wants any war and we only went there because US pressured us into - but now that the USA has became unreliable, there's no reason to sacrifice oneself.

I really wish hard that Europe gets it shit together.

They are adults now (rare commodity), but can still be pushed around, have their leash yanked.

They have to come to terms with their islands of racist tendencies.

My hope hasn't died yet

The only one of those that's really new is Greenland.

I am in Germany. Apparently very democratic place. However nothing happens what people voted for. There is always few groups advertising affordable living in Munich. Never happened. Every year the rent climbs to new never seen high. The system very obviously does not work as advertised. The conspiracist in me however thinks, that the system works as intended.

That's not what you voted for. Homeowners, on the other hand, did vote for it. In most countries they're the majority, and they're better at mobilizing politically. Autocracies are probably less likely to have the same issue because the leaders are petrified of a revolt from the lower classes. In a democracy, the majority (homeowners) will vote away your money.

i.o.w. the system works as intended

> There is always few groups advertising affordable living in Munich. Never happened. Every year the rent climbs to new never seen high. The system very obviously does not work as advertised.

Or the problem is harder then to be solved with just wanting to solve it?

> There is always few groups advertising affordable living in Munich. Never happened. Every year the rent climbs to new never seen high.

Well your population grows trough migration, your land does not and your construction doesn't match either in a long term inflationary environment with every incentive pointing in the continuation of that path.

See also Canada, Ireland, UK, Netherlands, Australia, etc, etc

Germany is a place of dense housing, so it's about construction more than land

The politicians enacted the policies requested. The problem is that the policies don't work and even have the opposite of the intended effect at times. Democracy divides power to (try to) prevent autocracy. It doesn't make most people smart so doing dumb things is still on the table and still has bad consequences.

The purpose of a system is what it does.

"As intended" is something that doesn't exist at all.

I am asking Iranians what’s next. It’s always the most important question. There will be some other guys with weapons taking over. Or should we expect peaceful elections coming like it was in Germany after defeating Nazis? But wait, Germany was conquered and divided by Allies to make it happen.

The 2. is very annoying. Especially when big sets fall apart due to this issue.

Let me add this: 4. no spare parts available. So when I break weird Chinese invention the whole set becomes useless without that very special part. It happened few times and I got back to used Lego sets.
